DIY Lampshade – Ribbons and Lace

As readers of the blog will know, I can’t quite resist the chance to upcycle something old into something unique and new.  Today comes a very simple, yet very effective project using a box of old ribbons and a tatty old lampshade.

It’s so simple in fact – I don’t even have step by step pictures to show you – by the time I’d started experimenting with my ribbons, I was left with an end product.  So let me try my best to talk you through it instead.

Take an old lampshade – I got mine free on Freecyle, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and all that.  Remove the fabric from the shade until you’re left with the wire frame.

Next, take some ribbon, tie it with a double knot anywhere on the frame, and then simply weave the ribbon in and out any way you like, around the frame.  Experiment with different colours, patterns and textures of ribbon.  I’ve used silver satin and ivory lace, leftover from our wedding DIY projects.

I’ve added this simple red piece of ribbon to add a splash of colour and really top the project off.

Go on – have a go.  It’s simple, fun and if it doesn’t look right you can just unwind your ribbons and start again.  I’d love to see your versions.  Share them with me on Twitter @LoveinMindBlog .
